Professor Szczepan Aleksander Pieniążek, an eminent scientist widely considered to be the father of Polish horticulture, made Skierniewice the 'fruit capital' of Poland. Skierniewice is the only place in Poland where you can try a delicious baked apple pie called skierlotka or the equally tasty jabłonnik – an apple soup flavoured with peppermint.
Apples are not the only thing to have influenced Skierniewice's image as a town with good taste. In the Institute of Horticulture carry out research into health foods. Additionally, Skierniewice has a very real chance of becoming a spa and health resort thanks to its thermal water resources and their therapeutic properties.
